Whether you are moving temporarily for work, or moving abroad as a fresh start, the presence of children in the picture can make the process difficult. Helping children say goodbye to their friends in different settings can prove to be challenging, and for this reason the problem must be approached in the right way in order to allow a smooth and pleasant transition for the children. In this article we have collected some tips that will help you in your task.

The education system in Slovakia

Explain to the children about the education system, which kindergarten or school they will go to. The education system in Slovakia is divided: up to the age of 3 there is a kind of nursery school, from the age of 3 to 6 - kindergarten. There are state or private kindergartens, both options are usually good, although some foreigners believe that private kindergartens are better and the children receive more attention there. In the private kindergartens there is also the study of various fields such as languages, sports, music. The schools in Slovakia are divided into three levels: ages 6 to 10 is elementary, ages 10 to 15 is middle school and over 15 is high school, at this age you can choose to study in a gymnasium or in a high school setting that gives both a matriculation certificate and a profession. Some gymnasiums have entrance exams and it depends on demand. High school studies last 4 years. Education in Slovakia is free, including university in the local language.

How to inform children

The hardest part is always the message itself and the children's initial reactions to the announce . Some may be enthusiastic about the idea, especially the little ones, while the big ones may express reluctance. It is recommended to involve the children as early as possible and let them be part of the process. Time to digest the idea is an important element in a good acceptance of the transition. It is recommended to inform the older children first, so that they can give the little ones a sense of security.

Try to avoid surprises

No matter at what age, children need a sense of security and stability in life. For this reason, it is important that you involve them in the process as much as possible. Show them pictures of the house, tell them about the school, about things that are in the new living environment, about hobbies that they can develop and so on. Children who know what to expect will have a much greater sense of security and the transition will be easier for them. It is worth reminding them that they have the option to keep in touch with their friends and maybe even drop by for a visit. If possible, it might be worth allowing the children to come with you to visit the destination before the move itself.

Get the kids into the rhythm

In order to allow children to adapt quickly to the new destination, it is recommended to allow them to start the adaptation from an early stage by learning the new language through games and videos. Tell them about the new land, the culture and history it contains. Prepare in advance a list of entertainment places in the new destination that you can visit with the children when you arrive. Ski resorts, amusement parks, etc. The more the children hear, the more enthusiastic they will be and the more they will get into the rhythm.

Let them say goodbye

After you have gone through all the persuasion, the talking and maybe the enthusiasm for the children, the moment of truth finally arrives. The children have to say goodbye to their friends. To give the children a real farewell experience, organize a farewell party for them with their friends, so that they feel they are in the center of things. It is important not to completely cut off the children from their friends, especially since there is a chance that they will return soon.

Pack everything together

When it comes to relocation for work purposes, the employer will send a moving company to pack all the items. However, it is important to start the packing phase together with the children and think about what should be taken. This is an important step that allows children to be partners in the process. Pack each child a cardboard box with their belongings, so that they feel comfortable in their new home.

In conclusion, moving abroad with children is a complex procedure for both the parents and the children. It is important to remain united along the way and give the children a sense of security and stability. Try to involve the children in the process as much as possible, emphasize all the advantages associated with the move and listen to their concerns.
