Relocation to Slovakia

Updated: Feb 28, 2023

Relocation can be a unique and one-time experience, but it is accompanied by quite a few challenges and questions, even when it comes to a comfortable and inviting country like Slovakia. There are some important things to consider before moving to Slovakia.

What you should know before relocating to Slovakia?

Slovakia is a safe and calm country, and the standard of living is a little lower than European countries, but life is cheaper and therefore it is easier to save and live well. That is why there are many clients who choose it as a destination for relocation.

Below are areas that are important to take into account when relocating to Slovakia:

What will be the monthly budget - Slovakia is considered a relatively cheap country compared to other EU countries. The monthly expenditure of a family of three-four people is about 800-1000 euros, not including expenses for an apartment. Rent in a reasonable non-central location for a three-room apartment is 500-1000 euros. In terms of salaries, the minimum salary is 650 euros and the average salary is 1100 euros.

Medicine - every foreigner in Slovakia is obliged to purchase health insurance. Therefore, before moving, be sure to check what health insurance you will need to have or that will be provided to you by your workplace in Slovakia, if indeed the relocation is related to a specific job.

Find out what happens if, God forbid, you need treatment, whether you will be treated there or in your country of origin, as well as what happens in unusual situations, such as pregnancy and childbirth. Also, it is important that you know that every hospital admission in Slovakia requires contacting your insurance company and it is important to follow these things.

Getting to know the place - see Slovakia before making a decision.

In order to create an easier and simpler acclimatization, it is recommended that one or both partners physically arrive at the place before the move. A preliminary tour will allow you to get to know the area where you want to live, look for apartments and even know in advance the way to the neighborhood grocery store. In addition to this, you can visit the children's schools and kindergartens and do some of the bureaucratic tasks you will have.

Plan in advance how you will get around: public transportation in Slovakia is well organized and managed and includes buses, trams and bicycle paths for urban travel as well as fast and regular trains for long-distance travel. At the same time, please note that unlike several European countries, Slovakia does not have a subway at all within the city. In order to travel by public transport, it is possible to purchase a variety of ticket types - from a one-time ticket for daily travel to a monthly free ticket at prices considered cheap. Also, if you want to rent a car, you will need to bring an international driver's license, passport, credit card and insurance.

What is important in relocation with children?

Continuing with the reference to the children, think about what will make the transition easier for them from getting to know them and don't be afraid to behave differently from the majority. For example, some would argue that it is better to finish the school year and start all over again the following year. However, some argue that it is actually recommended to move in the middle or towards the end of the year, so your child will have several months to acclimate to the new class and they will start the following year confidently and in a familiar way.

The kids may not be excited about the move because at the end of the day it wasn't their choice. Allow them to miss, be attentive to what they feel. It is possible that very soon they will have fun and they will adapt and the question of adaptation will be less critical.

Social networks - how to find community and support for relocation

It is recommended to join as early as possible the groups dealing with the country you are moving to, where you can read and get tips from people who have lived there for a while, starting with which residential area is better, through recommended educational institutions to a reliable car rental company. Also, you can ask any question you want and get diverse answers from several people.
